I know I’ve captured your attention with my handsome good looks because you stopped scrolling to read about me, right?? My name is Otter because well, a cute dog really must have a cute name.   All my friends in my rescue tell me I’m a very special dog.  I can tell that because of how much they love me and encourage me and take care of me.  I love my rescue friends, but I’m looking for a special family of my own.

I’m an 8 month old border collie with a beautiful chocolate and white coat.  I have green eyes and adorable (foster mom says that) floofy ears that I can move around like radar to help me understand my surroundings.  You see, I’m what they call a specially-abled pup.  I suffered some trauma when I was 3 weeks old, and am blind in my left eye and don’t hear quite normally.  Because of my accident and some brain injury, it takes me a little longer to understand what you’re telling me.  But don’t worry, while I’m figuring it out, I’ll look at you with my adorable cuteness as I think and engage my brain.  I’m really pretty smart, you know.  I know my name, I come when called (better than most human kids, right?), and almost have “sit” mastered.  Check out the video foster mom made.  As I’ve gotten older, my muscles have gotten stronger and I can do things I didn’t used to be able to.

I also have a condition called Diabetes insipidus.  My friends can tell you more about that, and it doesn’t have anything to do with sugar, but it makes me thirsty and have to go potty a lot.  But now I’m on special eye drops and I’m oh so much better!  I may be able to get off of the medicine later in my life, but might need it lifelong.

Do you have any squeaky toys at your house?  Because I’m going to need lots of those.  I just love toys, but especially the squeaky kind.  People laugh when I run and toss them in the air.  You should try it, it’s so much fun!  Playing tug is also fun, so you better get in shape because I’m pretty darn good at it.  I also like to entertain myself by running in the back yard.  Sometimes I visit other friends and foster mom says I figure out their houses and yards really fast.  Napping is up there on my list of things I like (admit it, you like naps too), and I adore naps in the sun.  I enjoy attention from my people, cuddling, soft pets and massage. Yes, massage.  Oooo it feels so good!

I like other dogs, too.  My friends think it would best if I have another friendly dog in my new house to help show me the ropes, but I’d be ok as an only dog as long as I get lots of attention and playtime with you!  I approach other dogs nicely, not like some annoying puppies.  If I get too playful and they give me a correction, I understand and walk away.  I live with 2 other dogs in my foster home right now.  Sometimes we go for walks together and I’m learning from them.  I can’t stand to have any pressure on my neck (because of what happened to me before), so I have to have a harness for my walks.  This is a work in progress and my new family will have to keep working with me.  I’ve never been around cats, but my friends think I’d be fine with cats.

I know this is a lot of information, but I want you to know as much about me as possible because I really am ready for my perfect forever family.  Here are a few more things you should know.  I’m excellent in my crate.  It’s my safe place and I sleep there, too. I get off balance pretty easily, and it’s not safe for me to go up and down stairs, so my new family should only have 1-2 steps that I’ll need to navigate.  I’ve never had an accident in the house for going #2, but I need to go out very frequently to go pee-pee or I will have an accident.  It’s related to my water drinking problem I told you about before.  So I’ll need a little more work on this and am working with foster mom on letting her know my signals when I need to go.

I like kids, but shouldn’t live with young kids.  I can’t react quickly to get out of the way of running, playing kids, so I could get hurt.  Also, when I get too over-excited, like when there’s lots of commotion or noise (even on the TV), I can’t calm down very easily and I can get a little mouthy when trying to tell you what I need.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t bite to be mean, I just use my mouth to help communicate and I wouldn’t want to hurt a little one.

So no, I’m not going to be an agility champion, and I can’t herd sheep, but I’m a champion at perseverance and cuteness and effort, and I try hard every day to be the bestest boy.  I’ve been all checked out by the specialists at the University of Missouri Veterinary Hospital.  Do you know they give you treats there if you’re a good boy?  I’m neutered, up to date on all my vaccines, microchipped and on monthly heartworm, flea and tick preventatives.  I weigh 28 pounds and am being fostered in the Kansas City area.

Whew, that’s a lot of information about me.  But hey, I’ve been doing all the talking, what about you?  Could you be my new forever family?  Oh I hope so!  Please fill out an application here so we can see!

Love and wags,

Otter
