Gorgeous Maggie is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever known. She is very affectionate with people she knows, although hesitant with strangers until she becomes more familiar with them. She paws, nudges and leans up against people – in the most endearing and unobtrusive way -- for attention. She is gentle and extremely easy to have around. She quietly sleeps most of the day. Her indoor energy level is very low. She is not high maintenance and does not need to be entertained, other than the occasional toss of her favorite squeaky gummy bear toy. Maggie is five years old. She is a beautiful black and white border collie. Her coat is medium length and her front paws look like little white speckled slippers. She is extremely smart. Her recall in the yard is outstanding, and she can sit, lie down, stay and shake. She can almost roll over! I have been working on leash walking with Maggie. With her gentle leader, she walks very nicely and only pulls moderately. She will likely have to continue wearing her gentle leader on walks until she is better trained. She is used to it and it is not too challenging to put on her. Maggie is house trained and whines when she wants to go out. Her previous owner said she is crate trained, however has not been in the crate at her foster home. She sleeps curled up on the end of the bed and stays in the gated kitchen when she is home alone. She has not exhibited any bad behaviors such as chewing, trying to escape or counter surfing when in that situation. Maggie was owned by the same family since she was a puppy but came into rescue because they were uncomfortable with her around their new toddler. Maggie would growl at the toddler when she pulled at her fur. She can also get very excitable when she plays outside, and because of her size and her speed, she could easily overwhelm young children or other dogs. For that reason, Maggie would live her best life in a home with adults and should not be adopted by anyone with children under 14. She has so much love to give and would be best as an only dog so she doesn’t have to share your love and attention. She has a high prey instinct and is very reactive to squirrels and rabbits. She has a 6’ fence in her foster home and has not shown any interest in escaping. It is unknown whether she could escape a yard with a shorter fence, however she is clearly very athletic and likely capable of doing so. She will need a fenced yard to keep her safe. Maggie is a sweet, calm and affectionate girl who loves a good pillow, a warm fire, a scratch on the butt and a ride in the car. She will be a perfect companion for a couple or single person who wants a loyal dog by their side who does not ask for much but gives plenty. Maggie is spayed, microchipped and up to date on all vaccinations. Maggie is being fostered in Des Moines, Iowa.
